Rupert Smith to Direct Commercials for The Institute
"Top Gear" Director Rupert Smith joins The Institute, founded by Partners Scott Gardenhour and Director Michael Bay, for exclusive commercial representation.
One of last year's BAFTA Brits to Watch, Smith has directed the shows "Mountain", "Faking It" and "Hottest Place on Earth" for the BBC and Europe's Channel 4. He has also directed projects for The Discovery Channel, NBC and, most recently, The History Channel.
Smith's childhood was filled with mountaineering expeditions and wilderness exploration in South Africa. After moving to London, a degree in media compelled him to pursue work as a journalist and a researcher for a local newspaper.
Smith comments on his early days as a jack-of-all-trades working in extreme, remote locations by saying that "it teaches you to be incredibly adaptable. Things can change. The weather can change. The camera can break, but you can't throw in the towel. You have to adapt for the show to survive."
Most recently, Smith created spots for the likes of Microsoft and KIA and is getting ready to start production on the third season of Top Gear. He is also currently in pre-production on a psychological survival feature set in the Florida Everglades.
Rupert lives in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles with his dog Lola.
